In October 2019, VUE Residency Shanghai on Yuyuan Road welcomed the internationally renowned Pop and conceptual artist Billy Apple, who will entered the neighborhood of Yuyuan as a resident artist and carried out the important art project, Billy Apple in Shanghai.

Billy Apple graduated from the Royal Academy of Art in 1962, and was hailed as the first generation of Pop artists in the UK. In 1969, he moved to New York and started a series of pioneering activities of Pop and conceptual art, and went down in art history as one of the internationally recognised founders of the Conceptual Art Movement. Today, Billy Apple is still active in the international art scene, continuing his innovation and promotion in all areas of conceptual art.

At the VUE Residency Shanghai, he added a perfect extension to his creative art projects Billy Apple in London and Billy Apple in New York: Billy Apple in Shanghai. Billy completed the geographical trajectory of the golden triangle of his life of artistic creation: London – New York – Shanghai, which encompasses the shift among cities for the central role of “Yesterday – Today – Tomorrow” in the global economy over time. This move is recorded in the history of international Pop and conceptual art, and at the same time, it injected the genes of international and higher standard art into the urban renewal projects of Yuyuan Road, energising the renovation of Yuyuan Rd. with the vitality of art.
